Why our open-peel office plan changed my life
Marcus Zestwell
Head of Peel Operations
Before lemonjello, I worked in a cubicle. It had three walls, a stapler, and a calendar of motivational limes. I thought I was happy. I was not. I was simply enclosed.
Then I walked into the open-peel office.
There are no walls
None. Not one. Our founder, Peter Lemonjello, says walls “keep the zest in,” and that zest should be shared with everyone, like a smell. It is very much like a smell.
There is one very large lemon
In the center of the office sits The Lemon. It is roughly the size of a hatchback. Nobody knows where it came from. Nobody asks. We hold our meetings around it, and when a meeting goes badly, someone gently pats it and we all feel better.
Productivity is up. We have not measured it, but you can just tell.
How it changed my life
- I no longer feel alone. The Lemon is always there.
- I have learned the names of all 40 of my coworkers, mostly because there is nowhere to hide.
- I take a “peel break” every afternoon, which is a short walk around The Lemon. I have walked an estimated 300 miles this year. All of them in a circle.
A note on Tuesdays
Some new hires ask about the “no limes on Tuesdays” policy. It is not a joke. It is the only rule we have. Please respect it.
If you are tired of walls, doors, and a general lack of giant citrus, come work with us. The Lemon is waiting.
